We were privileged to hear from Canon Andrew White at a public lecture on 6 November 2018 at Laidlaw’s Henderson campus.

For more than a decade Andrew pastored one of the largest churches in Iraq, St George’s Church in Baghdad, earning him the moniker “The Vicar of Baghad”. He is something of a legend: a man of great charm and energy, whose personal suffering has not deflected him from his internationally recognised relief and reconciliation work in Iraq and the Middle East. Since ordination, Andrew has had an extensive role in the work of reconciliation, bringing together Muslims and Christians, Israelis and Palestinians, Shia and Sunni – all of which have carried huge risks.

Andrew's current ministry is Jerusalem MERIT (Middle East Reconciliation International), dedicated to supporting the Iraqi refugee community in Jordan and to finding peaceful solutions to conflicts in the Middle East, promoting peace and reconciliation

He has written a number of books including: Iraq: Searching for Hope (2005), The Vicar of Baghdad (2009), Suffer the Children (2010), Faith Under Fire (2011), and Older Younger Brother: The Tragic Treatment by Christians of the Jews (2014). His most recent book is his autobiography, My Journey So Far (2015).

Andrew is a man who is unswervingly dedicated to the cause of reconciliation, despite his own personal struggles and sorrows (he suffers from MS and ME and is largely wheel-chair bound). His lecture was compelling, lively, inspiring and challenging. He spoke from a deep place of loving Jesus and loving people.
